bokeh goodness

chains

Oh, how I love my new Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D. The bokeh is so unbelievably gorgeous.

keeping an eye out for good light

It was sunny in Seattle on Saturday. It was sunny and warm, and it’s still technically winter. I took advantage of the nice weather and spent all afternoon strolling around downtown Seattle and taking pictures. The light was good to me that day, and, fortunately, I was paying attention. Here are my two favorite shots from the weekend:

daffodil flare

3:30pm at westlake

Interesting story about the first image. The roofline above Pike Place market is lined with daffodils, but I think most people completely ignore them. Being the flare/starbust junkie that I am, I deliberately looked up to see if the sun lined up for an interesting photo and noticed that it was positioned perfectly behind the flowers. When I was taking this shot, I had a few people come over and ask me what I was looking at and let them chimp a few images. They seemed surprised to know there were flowers up there.

The second image was a completely reactionary shot. I was walking down Pine towards Pike Place Market around 3:30 in the afternoon and saw the gorgeous long shadows of all the people in front of me. Without thinking, I started watching the patterns on the ground and snapped a few photos as I was walking. Walking past Westlake Mall with a camera in my face during a busy Saturday afternoon probably wasn’t the safest thing to do — I almost collided with a few people and nearly walked over a kid — but I had to do what I had to do to get my shot.

low-light awesomeness

jeremy

Check it:

  • Nikon D300 + Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D
  • 1/100 sec at f/1.4, ISO 3200
  • In-camera monochrome Picture Control with added sharpness and contrast.
  • RAW image edited in Lightroom to match camera LCD preview as close as possible.

I think I’m going to be shooting a lot more low-light images in black and white. This is just too awesome.

(BTW, this is Jeremy. He’s a kick-ass photographer.)
