Lately I’ve been digging using my iPhone as a relatively lo-fi point-and-shoot camera for when I don’t feel like lugging out my D300. The iPhone’s camera isn’t bad, but it also isn’t all that great. It has good resolution for web and small to medium prints. There’s plenty of data for post-processing (in fact, all images shot with an iPhone could use a bit of post regardless). And, unlike my D300, it fits in my pocket and it doesn’t scream “look at my giant black camera of DOOM”.

Here are a few photos that I snapped yesterday:

Anyone who’s used camera phones can see that these are obviously not straight out of camera. These were taken with an iPhone and then processed in Lightroom. (I’m not a purist when it comes to photography.) Even then, I am continually impressed with the nice results I can get when I work with iPhone photos. I even printed out some of the images at 8″ x 10″ to hang in Margaret’s apartment, and they look really good.

My iPhone is no substitute for a good compact camera (I’ve been eying the Panasonic Lumix LX3…), but it works fine if I’m not in a rush and don’t need super-high-quality images. It’s the one camera that is always with me. Can’t say the same for my other “real” cameras.

friday evening stroll to the lake

not quite ready to go in

It’s been a really rough week, and I bailed on social engagements to spend a relaxing evening chilling and decompressing. However, instead of sitting at home doing nothing, I went for a nice, long walk through downtown Bellevue and down to Meydenbauer Park. It was warm. It was quiet. It was calm. And it really helped to clear my head.

I brought my D300 along with me just in case I felt like doing some picture-taking along the way, but it never left my bag. I did whip out my iPhone for a few snaps that ended up conveying everything that I would’ve wanted to show from my stroll. It actually did a stellar job. Sometimes a simple, fully-automatic camera is all you need.

Everything I need to kick off a Friday morning at work.

And on a sadder note, the designer who brings in all of those wonderful Friday donuts for the team is leaving for another job. I wonder if someone else will step up as the Friday donut guy…

Oh yes. I have an iPhone now. A belated Valentine’s Day gift courtesy of Mia. She rocks.

And, yes, I already put Flickr and Twitter on the home screen. I’m such a dork. :P
