Let it be known that I love Labor Day weekend. Every year something fun happens. It could be as simple as a Labor Day BBQ or an entire weekend of fun and craziness. There were no BBQs this year, but there was some crazy-fun and more than my fair share of R&R.

The majority of the weekend was taken up the Penny Arcade Expo. I, along with over 50k geeks and nerds, descended up the Washington State Convention Center to over-saturate ourselves with video games, toys, and all sorts of geek culture. I only attended the first two days of the three-day event, but I still feel like I got my fill. I tried out some neat game demos (Afro Samurai was my fave from the weekend). I met up with a few old co-workers from Garage Games. And — my favorite part by far — I got to see Rock Band 2 in action (I didn’t actually play, because I didn’t feel like standing in line for 30+ minutes).

As usual, I had my camera with me, but I only focused it on my friends and our immediate activities. I figured there would enough photos of PAX floating around the interwebs, so I didn’t bother shooting the show itself. Here’s a fun photo of Jason, Montine, John, and Scott playing Rock Band 2 on the Harmonix main stage:

And here’s a shot of Rachel and her hand of cards in Zombies!!!:

And then here’s a stupid photo of an inappropriate zombie:

As with previous years, I had a blast at PAX. It was even better this year, since I knew more people going and could hang out with them rather than wandering around by myself. However, after two days of non-stop geekery, I needed to get away from all of the smelly nerds and bright flashing lights and just chill. The rest of the long weekend was spent enjoying the gorgeous weather, taking photos, editing photos, and playing a ton of Rock Band. I wish I could have long weekends every week.

july 4th weekend

at the seattle international beerfest

I always love when July 4th falls on a Friday. That typically means that the festivities can start on Thursday evening and go all the way until Saturday night/Sunday morning, leaving all day Sunday to recover from all the partying. And that is precisely what I did over the long holiday weekend.

I won’t go into the gory details of this crazy-busy weekend, but here’s a quick list of what I did:

Bar-hopping in Fremont with stops at Red Door, Brouwer’s, and Dad Watson’s. Lots of beer. Lots of goofiness. And someone did the banana dance in real life.

Day 1 of the Seattle International Beerfest with a bunch of friends. Lots and lots of beer was sampled in a nice 4-oz glass.

July 4th BBQ at a friend of a friend of a friend’s house next to Lake Union. Perfect viewing location for the Lake Union fireworks show without dealing with all the crazy crowds at Gasworks. Lots of alcohol was involved both at the BBQ and afterwards hanging out at a friend’s place.

Day 2 of the Seattle International Beerfest with a couple of friends. This time we only drank the beers we liked, and we drank a lot of them. We favored several different wits and Lindemans Pomme. We even got a bunch of tickets at half-price from some guys who were leaving early. That resulted in more beer consumption.

Dinner at a newly-opened sushi restaurant at a friend’s apartment building. Not bad so far, but they definitely have some growing pains. Food was good. Waitress was cute (always a plus).

Saw Hancock and was entertained.

Played Rock Band at a friend’s place until 3am. Arms are so sore.

Slept in on Sunday and spent the afternoon cleaning the apartment. Not the most exciting way to spend a Sunday afternoon, but the cleaning was much needed. I did get some cupcakes from Rebecca, so that was a huge bonus.

All in all, it was an awesome weekend. Here are a few pics of the fun:
