We are such dorks. :)

new toy, new project

you're money, baby!

After owning it for a month, I finally broke in the Polaroid back for my Holga. My “Holgaroid” is one heck of a fun camera to play with. All the quirks and “limitations” of a Holga combined with the instant gratification of Polaroid film makes for a new and interesting shooting experience for me.

I completely messed up the first couple of shots by yanking the film tabs too hard and jamming the rollers on the back, but the third shot came out fine (third time’s a charm, right?). A few more practice shots and I was starting to get the hang of things. I took the Holgaroid to a meetup on Saturday to try it out in the field. I even did some off-camera lighting just for kicks. So far, it’s been a blast.

The image above is my most recent Holgaroid shot. I setup a couple of speedlights in shoot-through umbrellas in a clamshell configuration, slapped a Pocket Wizard on the Holgaroid, and fired off two shots. The first one was mostly a test, but I somehow got the exposure right. The second shot is the image you see above. I think it looks pretty darn good.

Also, I’m officially doing the 52 Weeks project. I really like doing regular self-portraits but don’t want to commit to another 365 days. I can handle one a week, though, so this is likely going to be my main ongoing project this year. I might pick up one or two more, but, for now, this is it.

ready for some holgaroid action

new stuff to play with

After a bit of round-about traveling, my shipment of Polaroid film finally arrived today. One side of the box was ripped open and the packing tape wasn’t completely solid, but everything inside the box appeared to be ok. I’ll find out for sure once I try out the film in the Holga Polaroid back that my sister bought me for Christmas.

I’m actually kind of nervous about using the Holgaroid. The Holga part is fine, but I’ve never actually used peel-apart Polaroid film before and am worried just a bit that I’ll completely screw it up. I’m also afraid that I’ll do some serious damage to my hands. Looking at the back of the film box, I feel like working with this film is a shady and very toxic experience.

To quote the caution section:

  • Keep your film where it is cool and dry.
  • Each sheet of film contains a caustic (high alkali) fluid which can cause skin burn. Avoid contact with skin.
  • In case of contact with skin, wash off quickly with plenty of water. And in case of contact with eyes or mouth, flush off quickly with plenty of water then see your doctor immediately.
  • Keep discarded materials out of the reach of children and animals, and avoid contact with books, reading matter, clothing, furniture, etc.

I’m sure I’ll be OK (I’ve handled far worse items than this before), but it still makes me nervous. I am excited though. I love using my Holgas, and I love Polaroids. Theoretically, this should be a fun experience. We shall see…
