Since the daylight hours are longer nowadays, I’ve been going for pretty regular walks though the Bellevue Botanical Garden near my apartment. The flowers really aren’t in bloom yet due to the wacky winter-ish weather we’ve had in recent days, but it’s still quite relaxing and refreshing to stroll around after a day of staring at a computer monitor. I don’t get nearly enough exercise as it is, so the little bit of walking helps me feel a little bit better about myself.
It’s also a great opportunity for some photographic composition practice using plants and other “simple” items. Lately, it’s been all about selective focus and minimalist composition. I’ve been shooting mostly with my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D and Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G VR lenses using either wide apertures or long focal lengths to get very narrow depth of field. It’s a total shift from the ultra wide-angle stuff I’m used to shooting, but it’s good for me. Makes me better, stronger, faster. Well, maybe better. ;)
Spring is here, and what better way to kick it off than by going for a leisurely photostroll through the Bellevue Botanical Garden. Every year I say that I’m not much of a floral photography guy, but then every year I go out and take pictures of flowers. I have no rhyme or reason for why I do that. It just happens. Flowers are pretty and generally willing photography subjects. There’s a nice variety of them I can photograph. And I get to go outside and get some fresh air. And did I say flowers are pretty? ;)
