friday fun

365.004 - a little on edge

Random tidbits for this gloomy autumn Friday…

  • Heroes is a freakin’ good show. After a few weeks of separate storylines, everything is starting to converge. Not sure if there is enough material to go beyond one season, but, man, what there is so far is really really good.
  • On Monday, I started participating in 365 Days. The goal is to shoot one self-portrait every day for a full year. I always have a camera with me, so shooting at least one picture a day shouldn’t be too hard. :)
  • The Macbook Pro line has been upgraded to the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. In addition to that, default shipping RAM has been doubled (1 GB for the base config, 2 GB for the others), bigger hard drives are included, Firewire 800 is on all machines, and a new airline power adapter is included for free. I really really really want one now. Anyone got a spare $2500 they want to give me?
  • Apple has finally released the updated .Mac webmail interface to the world. It looks like OS X’s Mail app and has all sorts of Web 2.0 goodness, but it’s a bit slower than the previous version of the webmail UI. It’s too slow to run on my 5-year-old Powerbook, but, then again, I just use Mail on there. In Firefox on my Dell laptop, it’s not too bad. If anything, it’s all shiny and new.
  • Firefox 2 was released this week as well. It’s got shiny new buttons, spell-checking in form text entry areas, and a close button on each tab (FINALLY!). I know there are other updates/upgrades, but, frankly, I won’t notice most of those.
  • Trogdor will be an unlockable song in Guitar Hero 2. As if I needed yet another reason to buy this game in a couple of weeks.
  • Weeks after placing my order, my Lomo LC-A+ is finally with UPS and on its way to me. It should be arriving sometime at the end of next week. I have a feeling my film stash will drop slightly next weekend.

I suppose I should get some work done today. First, must eat lunch.

friday afternoon ramblings

no way over

Taking a little break from animating bad guys getting killed, so I thought I’d jot down a few ramblings.

There’s actually good stuff on TV!

My TV viewing has gone up exponentially this week. Normally, I leave my TV on in the background while I’m doing other things on my computer (usually editing photos, browsing Flickr, or chattin’ it up with friends), but there have been a flood of new shows/episodes that have caught my eye over the past few days. On Monday night, Heroes and Studio 60 kept me glued to the TV for a couple of hours. On Tuesday, I just had to catch the season finale of Eureka and the rerun of the premiere episode of Heroes. On Wednesday, my Lost addiction revived itself, and I also watched the premiere of The Nine (mostly because it was on right after Lost). On Thursday night, My Name Is Earl and The Office kept me glued to the TV as did the rerun of the WoW episode of Southpark. And tonight is the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica.

I haven’t been this much of a TV junkie in years. For the longest time, TV just plain sucked, but it looks like all the networks are finally letting out the good stuff. Good timing, too. Fall is here in the Seattle area, and that means weeks of grayness and rain. I don’t feel too bad about sitting at home during the week and watching some good television.
I just need to make sure to balance it out by going out and doing something outside my apartment on the weekends.

Photographic madness!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on my blog, but my beloved LOMO LC-A died a couple of months ago. I’ve tried replacing the batteries and adjusting and cleaning the battery contacts, but the shutter just won’t open. I even opened up the case to see if anything was loose (I’m pretty rough with the camera), but everything seemed ok. It’s probably something electronic-related, but I haven’t yet found any solutions. I’m going to keep searching online to see if there’s a way to fix it.

Just in case the camera can’t be fixed easily, I went ahead an ordered the recently announced LOMO LC-A+ as a replacement. The new camera ups the max ISO from 400 to a whopping 1600 and adds a new multiple exposure switch. The LC-A+ no longer has manual aperture options, but, since I never used it, it’s not a big loss for me. The first batch of LC-A+’s is currently held up in customs in China, so it’ll be a while before I get mine.

In the meantime, I’m keeping myself busy with my Olympus XA (which replaced my XA2 and its broken film advance wheel). In fact, if you’ve been looking in my Hawaii pictures, you’ll notice that all of the film shots there (for now) were taken with my XA. It’s a great camera with a nice sharp lens and just enough control to keep me happy. However, it’s not an LC-A. It’s not as quick and easy to use, and it doesn’t feel as comfortable in my hands as an LC-A. I still love the camera though and will continue to use it as long as I can. Once my LC-A+ shows up, though, my XA will have to take a backseat to all the LOMO goodness I’ll be working with.

OK, enough rambling for now. Back to animating…

thursday tidbits

these boots are made for walking

Just a few pre-lunch nuggets before I forget to type things up (read: get too lazy to do anything).

  • Yesterday I received my check from LEVYsheckler for usage of my photos on the new Washington State Tourism site. I’m thinking of putting that money towards a super-wide-angle lens for my D70. My top picks are the Tokina 12-24mm/F4 and the Sigma 10-20mm/F4-5.6. Both are about the same price, and, based on reviews that I’ve read, both perform equally well. The Tokina seems to be the more popular lens right now, because I can’t find it in stock anywhere.
  • Sony announced that they will be releasing their own line of digital SLRs this summer. The new cameras will be based on technologies acquired from the Konica-Minolta buyout. I’m really interested to see what Sony does with the new cameras. I really dig the technologies they’ve used in their compact and super-zoom digital cameras, and their imaging sensors absolutely rock. I just hope they don’t stick their damned memory sticks into the new cameras.
  • Last night I made the mistake of leaving the TV on when the first episode of final season for Alias started. I’ve been watching this show on and off for the past few years, but I never really locked onto it due to ABC’s nasty habit of leaving weeks between episodes. Last night’s 2-hour season premiere was a really fun episode, and now I’m now hooked on it again. Since this is the final season, and there are only 5 episodes left, I don’t think it’s too bad a thing for me to watch each week. Plus, it’s on the same night as Lost, so I’ll be watching TV anyway.
  • About the picture of the woman walking: No particular relevance to this post. I’m including it, because I like it. I snapped this when I was strolling around Pike Place Market on Easter Sunday. She was cruising through the crowds without skipping a beat, and those boots and the jacket are just too groovy.

Alright, time for lunch.
