weekend fun

that's a really big red ball

Woo! What a fun weekend it was. After a pretty relaxing Friday afternoon at work, I went for a short walk around downtown Bellevue taking pictures and soaking up the sun. There was a neat sculpture exhibit at Downtown Park that really took advantage of the light and surroundings to really show off the work. One of the works involved three gigantic red balls suspended in the trees. The premise was a bit thin – something about the essence of play at a park and messing with our perception of scale – but it was still kind of neat seeing giant red balls floating in trees.

After my walk, I met with Scott and Tom for some grub at California Pizza Kitchen and then a late showing of Nacho Libre which was such an incredibly dumb and stupid movie. It was so dumb that I just could not stop laughing through the whole thing. It was completely absurd. There really wasn’t much of a script to speak of, just a string of funny moments interspersed with wrestling scenes. It was far from great cinema, but it was so much fun. Normally, I wouldn’t be really impressed with a movie like this, but I think that I was just in the mood for zero brain activity that night.

On Saturday I drove down to my dad and stepmom’s place in Vancouver (not BC) for my cousin Ricky’s graduation party. Ricky attended the University of Oregon (GO DUCKS!) and got a degree in Economics. To celebrate his accomplishment, my parents offered up their home to host a big graduation bash complete with tons of food, more booze than people could drink (I brought back two cases of beer), poker, an embarrassing slideshow featuring pictures from Ricky’s childhood, and lots of friends and family to share in the fun.

As usual I was running with my camera for most of the evening. My little cousin Jonina remembered that she had dubbed me “Camera Boy” from a month ago and instantly picked up where she left off. Within minutes of me pulling out my camera, I heard “Camera Boy! Come take pictures!” from across the house. Jonina even got my other cousin Hailey involved in the photographic fun. She called me “Picture Boy” just to mix things up a bit. I thought it was tough following Jonina around on Mother’s Day, but that was nothing compared to trying to keep up with two little girls with way too much energy running around a household filled with 30+ people. I did manage to capture some fun photos which I’ll be uploading over the next couple of days.

Today (Sunday) I had a nice Father’s Day lunch with my dad. We went to SushiLand to load up on sushi and had good conversation. It had been a very long time since it was just the two of us at any event, so it was kind of nice to have some 1-on-1 time. It was also one of the very few times I was able to treat my dad to lunch. He’s usually insanely fast about getting the bill and paying for it before you even get a chance to look at it. I was prepared today and beat him to the punch. He resisted, but I pulled the Father’s Day card and got to pay for the meal.

Now that I’m back after a weekend of eating, drinking, photographing, eating more, and driving, I’m actually quite exhausted. Spending time with my family is fun, but it can be tiring. It’s nice to come home to a quiet apartment to just relax and chill for an evening. And by relax and chill I mean sit in front of my computer post-processing pictures from the weekend, catching up on all the Flickr activity I missed while I was gone, and enjoying a smoothie from Jamba Juice. Definitely a great way to finish off the weekend before heading back to work tomorrow.

catching up

family

I know it’s been a few days since I’ve written a proper blog post, but I do have good reasons for being this quiet. I was taken out for a couple of days by a bad case of food poisoning. My family came into town for a wedding and paid me a visit. I went to the wedding and the banquet with my family. I did a bit of shopping for some new clothes. And, of course, I spent an entire afternoon enjoying the sun, walking around, and taking a few photos.

I’m too tired to write more details about the events, but keep an eye on my Flickr photostream this week. I’ll be uploading a few photos from Saturday night’s wedding banquet, the keepers from my photostroll in Bellevue earlier today, and a few photos for the Utata Toys weekend tagging project. I may also upload a few photos of the new threads I got this weekend (the shirt, tie, and pants in the photo above are brand new), thanks to a bit of nudging from the wackos in the #utata IRC channel (#utata on irc.freenode.net). They might make for some fun Self Portrait Challenge photos that look like fashion ads.

Aight, enough for tonight.

This is Mika, my newest baby cousin. He’s a cool little dude who warmed up to me pretty quickly. Apparently, I have a face that makes him laugh.

the best happy face ever

My little cousin Jonina is an absolute blast to hang out with. She’s energetic, friendly, and not afraid of my camera. In fact, she loves the attention she gets from me whenever I show up to family events. When I was in Portland on Mother’s Day, I got to spend an afternoon playing with her, and she has now dubbed me her “Camera Boy”.

This is one of nearly 50 shots I took of her on Sunday. The harsh afternoon lighting was a bit tricky to manage, so only a handful of photos actually look good. It was one of those times when I wish I had some reflectors with me to do some bounce lighting or an external flash for some fill light. Oh well. I still captured the moments.

This particular photo was shot with my new Sigma 10-20mm super wide-angle lens. I was trying to practice eyeballing the lens’ minimum focusing distance of about 9 inches, and it looks like I did ok. Jonina’s face is slightly out of focus, but that could’ve also been her never standing still. It works though.

As you can see here, Jonina has a wonderful smile. She’s also incredibly giggly when she’s having fun, and it’s incredibly infectious. Even though I was trying to actually take a nice photo of her, I just couldn’t resist chasing her around and playing whatever game she came up with at the time. We had a variety of forward and backward races across the yard. We played hide and seek. She did a gymnastics show while I played the commentator. We even played pirate ship on the garden rocks. I don’t think I’ve had that much fun in a long time.
