This morning Steve Jobs gave his first major presentation of the year at Macworld 2008. He announced Time Capsule, a wireless networking and backup device. He introduced several updates for iTunes, Apple TV, the iPhone, and the iPod Touch. And he unveiled “the world’s thinnest notebook” — the MacBook Air.
My initial reaction: Meh.
Sure, I was just reading the liveblogs from both the Macworld staff and the guys over in Wired’s Gadget Lab, but it seems that I am less and less impressed every year. Nothing terribly important to me was announced. And, frankly, nothing really stands out to me as something so unbelievably cool that I have to get it as soon as it’s available. Maybe I’m just getting jaded. Or maybe it’s just hard for any company to one-up itself year after year. Probably a bit of both.
I’ll have to sit on this one a bit more and play with everything when they’re available at an Apple Store before I pass final judgement. I didn’t think much of the MacBook when it was first announced, but, after testing it out in person, I ended up getting one for myself. I highly doubt I’ll get a MacBook Air (costs way too much for less firepower than my MacBook), but Time Capsule is a neat product (I know I can do the same with an Airport Extreme and my current batch of drives), and the updated iPod Touch is definitely more interesting to me now.
Still, this year’s Macworld isn’t off to such a stellar start for me. Maybe Apple will surprise me later this week. I’m not holding my breath though.
