busy busy summer

So, what’s the latest happenings in the Land of Poo? Well…

Last Thursday was the monthly Brews and Views meetup at Pies and Pints. I highly recommend checking out the Seattle Flickr Meetup pool for more photos from the evening. It was… interesting…

new toys! wheeeee!!!! ack, i've hit the ceiling!

I got some lighting gear from MPEX and promptly put it to use on a jumping self-portrait (surprise, surprise).

la jarana flamenca @ bellevue artsfair red black and white

I went to the Bellevue Arts Fair on Sunday and watched flamenco dancers perform.

Not a bad way to close out July. August is kicking off with a load of events as well. According to Google Calendar, here’s what I have on tap for the next week:

Wednesday, August 1: Seattle Flickrites doing a Strobist meetup in SODO
Thursday, August 2: First Thursday in Pioneer Square
Saturday, August 4: Tacoma Hotrod-A-Rama
Monday, August 6: Fellow Seattle Flickrite Jennifer Neal’s first show opening

This is turning out to be the busiest summer ever!

kickin’ xpro film

I have a new favorite film for cross processing: Fujifilm Fujichrome T64. It’s a tungsten balanced slide film that isn’t exactly cheap ($4.80 for 120, almost $8 for 35mm), but, man, the colors that come from it are kickin’! Check out these shots from the first roll I sent through one of my Holgas:

4 square in the little house
red and red and a bit of blue silo

I need to get a roll going in my LC-A soon, because I really really really love these colors. Kodak E100VS is still at the top of my faves list, but this T64 could displace it.

seattle flickrites rock

Seattle Flickrites rock. There’s no doubt about it. We’re one of the largest and most active photography meetup groups on the planet. We have a diverse range of fun and energetic members who make every meetup a blast. And, if I may say so myself, we’ve got skillz!

I was browsing through Flickr’s Explore pages (tracking my recently popular images), and I noticed several images from my fellow Seattle photogs were also in Explore. Here are three of my faves from the past few days:

You Don’t Know Me by Brittney

La Tristesse- 270

La Tristesse by Rob

into the deep by Rachel

If you haven’t already, check out the Seattle Flickr Meetups group. There are a lot of fun photos from our meetups there. Also take a look at the images in each member’s photostream for even more amazing photos. There’s some great work coming out of the Seattle area, and I’m proud to be amongst these great photographers.

gotta love it when i make it on explore

Flickr’s Explore/Interestingness thingamajig is an odd beast. No one really knows how it works, yet people put so much value on images that make it onto Explore. While I don’t do anything in particular to try to make it onto Explore, I do love it when one of my images even cracks in the top 500. It’s just a little bit of validation that some people actually like my work.

This week has been a particularly good Explore week for me. Four of my images made it into the Interestingness archives, one of which is the shot I got of Brittney from earlier this week. That one is still in the top 20 for the day I uploaded it and is now one of my most popular images.

The other big one is the image featured above, which is on its way to become my most popular image. As of this writing, it has over 1500 views, 107 favorites, 70+ comments (a couple are my own), and is currently sitting at #3 on Interestingess for the day. It’s only been online for just over 24 hours, so those numbers are freakin’ insane for me.

Despite those impressive numbers, I’m certain that the it will drop out of Explore soon enough. I’m guessing some photo of a cute little puppy will usurp me. That or a pretty sunset. :P
