Whew! I finally got most of my main Hawaii vacation pictures uploaded to my Flickr photostream. It took almost a week, but it’s done. I actually have a ton more that I want share at a later date, but, for now, the pictures that are in that set represent my view of the trip.
I had originally planned on writing a long blog post about the trip, but, frankly, I don’t have the energy nor the motivation to do so. I spent so much time sorting through photos, editing them, tagging them, and adding captions, that I don’t think there’s really too much more I want to write right now. So, if you’re interested in reading a little bit about the trip, check out the accompanying text on the photos. You can also do a quick skim by looking at the set in it’s detail view (which, btw, is a really neat feature that Flickr quietly added a little while ago).
Another neat way to check out the photos is to look at a mapped view of them. I geotagged all the Hawaii-specific photos, so you can see (almost) exactly where everything happened on the Big Island. You can get a good sense of how little of the island I actually saw in my time there. They don’t call is the Big Island for no reason.
Finally, if you want to see what everyone else from the group photographed, go check out their Hawaii vacation sets:
- Scott
- Ian (Warning: he has over 800 photos there!)
- Leigha
- Jed and Lilia
Between the six of us, we photographed just about everything we encountered on the island. It’s kind of neat skimming through everyone’s photos and seeing how each of us chose to shoot things. As per my usual shooting, I mostly stuck with my 10-20mm lens and my XA (35mm) for wide-angles, distortions, and more snapshot-ish stuff. Scott had a telephoto lens to get some longer shots and tight photos with nice bokeh. Ian went wacko with his Canon Powershot and photographed everything, focusing mainly on details and macros for texture research. Leigha shot pretty much everything as well. Jed and Lilia actually kept the shooting to a minimum, because they figured that the rest of us would get enough photographs for them.
Anyway, go check out the photos in my set and everyone else’s sets. You can definitely tell we all had a blast on our trip. Now that the vacation photos are out of the way, it’s time to get back to my normal posting schedule. Coming up in the queue, pics from last weekend’s Fremont Oktoberfest, most likely some pictures from tonight’s Seattle Flickr Meetup at The Elysian, and stuff from my huge backlog of cross processed photos. Never a shortage of photos to share. :)
I’m back from my vacation to the Big Island in Hawaii, and, needless to say, I am exhausted. My buddies and I had a blast chilling on the beach, trying out some of the local cafes and restaurants, checking out a few local sights, exploring the volcano, and cooking a few meals at the beach house. It was a fun trip, and I already miss Hawaii, but, at the same time, I’m happy to home.
My cameras were put to good use while I was in Hawaii, and I even picked up an underwater camera for a few shots at the beach. I now have the monstrous task of sifting through all of the pictures I took and figuring out which ones to share with the world. I also have to try to remember where everything was taken, so I can tag and map them appropriately. Sounds like a nice weekend project.
Uploads to my Flickr photostream will be commencing shortly. Stay tuned.
In just a few hours, I’ll be on a plane heading to the Big Island in beautiful and warm Hawaii for a few days of R&R. A bunch of college buddies and I have been trying to plan a group getaway for years now, but there’s always been hiccups in our plans, i.e. schedules, budgets, interest, etc. This year we started planning months ahead of time and settled on Hawaii, because that seemed like the coolest vacation spot for all of us. We didn’t get everyone on the trip with us, but those of us going will be thinking of them while we’re soaking up the island goodness.
The gang (all 6 of us) will be staying at a gorgeous beach house in Kealakekua Bay, not far from Kona. All we have planned right now is relaxation, hanging out, and not worrying about work, responsibilities, and everything else that we avoid on vacations. I’m also planning on exploring as much of the area as I can and photographing every moment.
Speaking of photographing things, I’ll be bringing a full arsenal of photographic gear with me. Here’s what I have loaded in my gear bag right now:
Cameras:
Nikon D70 w/ 18-70mm, 50mm, and 10-20mm lenses
SB-600 Speedlight
Canon AE-1 w/ 24mm and 50mm lenses
Holga 120CFN
LOMO Fisheye No. 2
Olympus XA (this will probably get more use than anything else)
35mm film:
2 rolls Kodak Ektachrome E100VS
2 rolls Kodak Ektachrome E100GX
1 roll Kodak Ultra Color 100
2 rolls Kodak Gold 200
2 rolls Kodak Elitechrome 100
2 rolls Fujicolor Pro 400H
120 film:
2 rolls Kodak Ektachrome E100VS
2 rolls Kodak Ultra Color 400
2 rolls Kodak Ultra Color 100
2 rolls Kodak Porta 400VC
2 rolls Fujicolor Reala 100
1 roll Fujichrome Velvia 100F
1/2 roll Kodak Tri-X 400TX (already in Holga)
Yes, that’s a lot of gear, but it all fits in my backpack, and I want to make sure I have enough ammo to capture my vacation moments. That and I’m a certified photo nut (but you already knew that). ;)
Alright, time to double-check my bags, grab a light lunch, and head out to the airport. Back in a week!
