good press for pirates

Next-Generation recently released their list of the Top 20 Playable Games of E3, and, surprise surprise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest clocked in at #4! We beat out such games as Virtua Fighter 5, Killzone: Liberation, Final Fantasy XII, and Crysis, which are obviously much larger and popular games. Guitar Hero 2 ranked higher, but, dude, it’s Guitar Hero!!!

Although Next-Gen lumped both the PSP and DS versions together, both games are from Amaze, and it still feels good to get the ranking and good press. Movie tie-ins tend to get penalized straight out of the gates, so it’s a good thing that the guys at Next-Gen actually looked beyond the license and examined the gameplay.

Here’s a quick excerpt from the article:

Picking up your sword as Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow, you get to slash and bash your way through ruffian-laden levels, thanks to a surprisingly articulate combat system, as well as excellent animation and graphics…

“Excellent animation”! Yes! Makes me feel good to have a hand in over half of the animations in the game. I also gotta give props to Newsquirt for spending a year nitpicking Jack Sparrow’s animations. They do look incredibly fluid and really capture the essence of Jack Sparrow. I know he went insane staring at nothing but Jack for pretty much the entire project, but the hard work really paid off.

I’m now more excited than ever to see the game on the shelves and, more importantly, in people’s hands. I’m proud of the work that I did on it, and I hope everyone likes the game. Once I’m clear to do so, I’ll post some of my animations for people to see outside of the game environment.

happiness

the best happy face ever

My little cousin Jonina is an absolute blast to hang out with. She’s energetic, friendly, and not afraid of my camera. In fact, she loves the attention she gets from me whenever I show up to family events. When I was in Portland on Mother’s Day, I got to spend an afternoon playing with her, and she has now dubbed me her “Camera Boy”.

This is one of nearly 50 shots I took of her on Sunday. The harsh afternoon lighting was a bit tricky to manage, so only a handful of photos actually look good. It was one of those times when I wish I had some reflectors with me to do some bounce lighting or an external flash for some fill light. Oh well. I still captured the moments.

This particular photo was shot with my new Sigma 10-20mm super wide-angle lens. I was trying to practice eyeballing the lens’ minimum focusing distance of about 9 inches, and it looks like I did ok. Jonina’s face is slightly out of focus, but that could’ve also been her never standing still. It works though.

As you can see here, Jonina has a wonderful smile. She’s also incredibly giggly when she’s having fun, and it’s incredibly infectious. Even though I was trying to actually take a nice photo of her, I just couldn’t resist chasing her around and playing whatever game she came up with at the time. We had a variety of forward and backward races across the yard. We played hide and seek. She did a gymnastics show while I played the commentator. We even played pirate ship on the garden rocks. I don’t think I’ve had that much fun in a long time.

mother’s day

sisters

Over the weekend I drove down to the Portland area to spend some time with my family for Mother’s Day. I hadn’t actually been back there since Christmas, so I was due for a visit. I normally head down there once or twice every couple of months, but busy schedules prohibited me from making the drive. Insane gas prices didn’t help either, not like the prices this past weekend were all that great either.

Although Mother’s Day was the catalyst for getting everyone together in the same room, it was really all about seeing all the relatives again and catching up from the past few months. Sure, we wish all the moms Happy Mother’s Day, give them flowers and cards, and shower them with love, but I talk to my mom on the phone every couple of weeks, so Mother’s Day was just another excuse for us to go out, have a fancy meal, and socialize.

The fancy meal this year was the Mother’s Day Buffet at the Portland Marriott. I’m generally not a buffet guy, since I try to control how much I eat, but I let my normal eating limit slip a little bit for the special occasion. I kicked things off with a big fat waffle with strawberry compote and whipped cream then moved on to a plate of roasted pork loin, poached salmon, a few breakfast sausage links, and grilled veggies. I didn’t eat nearly enough food to justify the high cost of the meal, but the rest of my relatives more than made up for it.

One of the highlights of the meal was getting to see my little cousin Karissa. She’s always a blast to hang out with. It takes her a moment to warm up to me, but once she’s over her shyness, she’s like a crazy girl who can’t be controlled. Karissa had made a tissue paper butterfly as a Mother’s Day gift for her mom, and she insisted on introducing everyone to the butterfly, whose name was Buttercup.

After the introductions, Karissa had a light lunch and then gorged herself on goodies from the chocolate fountain. She dipped pineapple, strawberries, dried bananas, marshmallows, and, of all things, potato chips. She made a grand ol’ mess of her face with all the chocolate. As you would expect of any child who takes in a lot of chocolate, Karissa was soon in ultra-hyper mode, running around in circles and dragging everyone along with her. It was far too much fun.

The afternoon concluded with a short visit to my cousin Patty’s new condo over in John’s Landing. She managed to score a huge 950-sq-ft 2-bedroom 2-bath condo within a stone’s throw of the Willamette River for under $300,000. I guess it’s good to live in the Portland area, because, compared to Bellevue, it’s dirt cheap. I was entirely too jealous of her for finding such a great place. Of course, since her condo is in such a nice central location, I’m sure the family will be using it as a meeting point more frequently. That I’m not jealous of at all.

The photos from the afternoon are available in my Flickr photostream. Because I was too busy eating and socializing, I didn’t take very many pictures. However, I did manage to capture a handful of nice moments for the virtual family album.

tuesday newness

Tuesday must be the official rollout date for new goodies. Two big ones for today.

First is Apple’s new MacBook laptops. These new Intel Core Duo-based notebooks replace the iBooks and now come in black or white finishes. The new higher-resolution 13.3″ glossy wide screens look pretty neat, and the 2 GHz Core Duo processors are definitely welcome additions. I’m not too keen on the integrated graphics chips, but I suppose there needs to be some separation between the MacBook and MacBook Pro models. Price isn’t too bad either. If I wasn’t such a graphics snob, I’d seriously consider one of these as my upgrade computer.

Second is the all new Flickr site design. The upgrade from beta to gamma status brings loads and loads of AJAX and Flash goodies to the site. Everything is tighter, cleaner, easier to use, and, most important of all, way faster. The new Organizr is entirely too cool. Drag-and-drop and double-click support really make the photo organizing experience so much fun. The new user menus can be a bit distracting sometimes, but they do offer a bit more functionality and convenience with less mousing around. In a month or so, the shiny newness will fade, and it’ll be business as usual on Flickr again.

I do love Tuesdays. Almost always something new. :)
