Birthday Dinner

My 30th Birthday

I had a very cool birthday dinner with my friends tonight. It was a bit of a last-minute thing, but we still got the gang together. I would’ve been content relaxing at home by myself, but, knowing my friends, they wouldn’t let me spend my birthday alone, let alone my 30th birthday.

We went to Big Time Pizza, my favorite pizza joint on this side of the lake, and pretty much gorged ourselves on pizza, beer, and dessert. We originally ordered 2 small pizzas and a large, but the kitchen accidentally made 3 smalls. The large pizza eventually showed up, so we ended up getting 4 pizzas. Also, the restaurant gave us 2 desserts – a banana split with walnuts and a strawberry shortcake – as part of my birthday celebration. To takes things up yet another notch, Janet got a very tasty ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. It was mint chocolate chip ice cream on a chocolate cake, my favorite combo. And, of course, we had a couple of pitchers of Mac and Jack’s. Can’t have a dinner without beer.

In addition to all the food and beer, Tim got me Byrne’s Complete Book of Pool Shots. The book contains “350 moves every player should know”. Looks like I have my work cut out for me as I make my through the book and practice the shots at work.

I am now extremely full and extremely happy from my birthday dinner. I don’t think I’ll be having pizza and beer for some time, and I also have half of an ice cream cake in my freezer that should hold me over for desserts for a while. I also had a great time hanging out with my friends for my 30th. Fun conversation and good times as usual.

Really the only thing missing was Mei. Crossing an ocean is sort of a long trip, so I can understand that it would be hard for Mei to make it to my birthday dinner. Also, we only gave about 6 hours’ notice. Tough to travel over the Pacific in that short amount of time. ;)

Anyway, as can be expected, I got some pics from tonight’s dinner. I only brought my dinky Canon SD10 and I forgot to turn on the flash in the low light, so the pics are bit noisy and/or blurry. Then again, it pretty much syncs up with what we were seeing after all the beer and food we had. You can view the whole set over at my Flickr photostream.

The Big Three-Oh

I am now officially 30 years old. And what better way to kick off my 30th birthday than with a bit of Remy Martin XO cognac.

X.O.

My dad gave me this very expensive bottle of cognac at his birthday a couple of years ago. It was already opened when I got it, and I think I’ve taken off about an inch out of the bottle since then. I don’t drink cognac very often, and, when I do, I usually save it for special occasions. Today definitely counts as one.

New Look

The new look for Poo-Poo Platter is now up and running. I started with the Mallow theme from Matthew and proceeded to hack through the CSS and PHP files. There were only a few hiccups along the way (mostly CSS-related layout issues), but I think I’ve got things under control.

Do Not Play

With the new theme comes a new header image. I took the photo above earlier this evening and decided to do some Photoshop voodoo to spice it up for the blog. I originally tried to use the caution sign as part of the header image, but I couldn’t find a decent composition. As I was trying different cropping variations, I happened upon a nice crop of the bent metal bar. I then added some text, the space invader image, and did some degrading of the custom elements. Nothing fancy, but I like it.

Now that it is officially summer, I decided to go with brighter, more vibrant colors. Lots of red, yellow, and light shades of gray now adorn the blog. I’ve also added navigation tabs under the header image to make my personal links easier to find. The sidebar content remains the same.

The site is also slightly wider than the previous version. This allows me to use bigger header images (apologies to all you 56k-ers)and show wider blocks of text in the content area for less scrolling. I can also now leave my Flickr images at their default widths of 500 pixels instead of manually adjusting HTML values to 400 pixels wide (the previous template was rather narrow). That just means less work on my part when I link to images in my photostream.

The only bug that I’m aware of is the Category dropdown menu does not work properly in Internet Explorer. Frankly, I could care less. The site looks fine in Safari and Firefox, and that’s all I’m supporting. Also, IE for OS X is dead, so there’s no reason for me to support it anymore.

Now that I have the new look for my blog up and running, I should really consider revamping my regular site. It really needs it…

New Blog Design

Please excuse the dust as I mess around with the layout and design of the blog once again (you rss/atom readers don’t have to worry about this). I’m trying a whole new Wordpress template system and will most likely break something as I tweak the look of things. Hopefully, I won’t screw things up too much.
