Day 5 with my PSP, and I am still having a blast with it. After spending a good portion of tonight playing Lumines, I decided to let my thumbs rest a bit and write a bit about the photo viewing capabilities of the PSP.
Loading photos onto the PSP is so unbelievably easy. All you have to do is plugin the PSP via USB, open the “PSP” folder on the memory stick, and drag and drop your pictures into the “PHOTO” folder. You can also sort the PHOTO folder with subfolders to create individual “albums”. However, you cannot put folders within folders. The images and folders will show up under the Photo menu item for you to browse to your heart’s content.
Browsing the photos is very straightforward. The trigger buttons are used to go forward and back. The square button and the analog stick are used to zoom and pan the image. There is also a simple slideshow feature with optional on-screen controls which greatly resemble the translucent controls in iPhoto.
The pan and zoom feature is really quite cool. Both options respond to the sensitivity on the analog stick, so you can pan and zoom slowly or quickly. With the PSP’s resolution of 480×272, you can zoom in quite closely to large photos. I resized my photos to 800×600, and they looked really nice when viewed on the PSP at the normal size. Zooming into them yielded even greater detail. While this isn’t necessarily a must-have feature for photo viewing, it’s great for “oooh’s” and “aahhhh’s”.
Photo viewing isn’t perfect though. There’s no option for playing music while viewing the slideshow. Also, since there is no video-out option for the PSP, viewing is restricted to the PSP’s display. If these two features were included, the PSP would definitely be a top contender for a true portable media presentation system.
Despite those two missing options, viewing photos on the PSP is still a very pleasant experience. Organizing photos on the memory stick is incredibly easy and straight-forward. Navigation is super simple. And, as I have opined again and again over the past few blog postings, the images look great on the PSP’s display.

thank you.
very well written. i found your article from a web search. however, within each psp photo albums, how do you organize the photos. in other words, as an example, how do you make a particular photo the first photo to show on a slide show, for example? how do you make another one the second photo/slide, etc?
if you know the answer and can help out, i would appreciate knowing. this’s got to be a very big question for psp users, i have not been able to find the solution anywhere. thanks in advance.
As far as I can tell, the images go in alphabetical order. Just name everything accordingly before transfering the PSP.
its not aplhabetical order it last updated… it took me a while too find out…
check out decline of video gaming 3 its amasing hope you like
The files are displayed in ascending date order. You can check out Hotpot (www.qrias.com) which sorts the files in alpha-numeric order so that your eBook, comics and slide show order is not messed up.
