After a very disappointing end to Halo 2’s single-player campaign, I decided to try to find some redeeming quality in the game by jumping into a few multiplayer matches. My first jaunt into the world of Xbox Live last weekend was a fun one, but it was only a training level. I figured it was time to get into some more serious matches.
The first few matches I played were against some great guys from the Garage Games community. Dave Myers from 21-6 Productions and Logan Foster from Max Gaming Technologies both contacted me earlier today to let me know they were organizing a game party tonight. We played a mix of Oddball and King of the Hill. I couldn’t hang on to the ball for very long in Oddball, mostly because all of the other players were so much better. At least I had fun running around punching people in the back while they were scrambling for the ball. And I didn’t come in last place.
I found more success in King of the Hill. Although I didn’t win any of them, I did manage to stay in 2nd or 3rd most of the time. I think I had more fun talking smack to the other players than anything else. It’s kind of neat knowing who all the players are in real life and being able to taunt them and swear at them without fear of offending anyone.
After the GG games, I played some Optimatch Team Skirmish games. I didn’t do too bad in those matches. I was on the winning team for most of the Capture the Flag games. I even capped the flag once and had a couple of saves. However, I did horribly on Assault, because I had no idea what was going on, and Slayer wasn’t even funny. I got owned completely on those matches. Oh well. I’m still new to XBL games, so I’ll just need to practice more.
Overall, I found Halo 2 on Xbox Live a very fun experience. I’m not nearly fast enough to rack up a lot of kills, so I’m definitely going to try to avoid Slayer matches as much as I can. I wonder if my neighbors can hear me yelling and screaming as I play…
