Jumping Into MaxScript

As I was researching and testing out ideas for my next SimplyMax video tutorial, I decided to start learning a bit more about MaxScript. I was setting up some controls for a hand rig and encountered a part of the process that was unbelievably tedious. Parameter wiring the spinner controls to each finger bone involved at least 5 or 6 mouse clicks per finger as well as typing (copying-pasting) a similar expression every single time. Rather than set up everything manually, I opted for a mostly script-based approach. Enter MaxScript…

Mount St. Helens Volcanic Advisory

Looks like things are shaking up down at Mount St. Helens. A few days ago, seismic activity changed in the volcano with several swarms of small quakes throughout the day. The frequency of the quakes went up to about 2 per minute, but the quakes registered less than Magnitude 2. Then, overnight, the seismic activity increased significantly with about 3-4 quakes per minute, with some of the largest quakes reaching Magnitude 2.5. The Volcano Advisory was elevated to Level 2. Level 3 is when the volcano actually erupts.

Here are a couple of very interesting activity graphs:

Graph from Longmire, Mt. Rainier

Graph from Dome Station, Mount St. Helens

It’s interesting to compare the activity in the two graphs. Pretty easy to see that what’s going on at Mount St. Helens is definitely cause for concern.

Second Video is Done

I managed to record my second SimplyMax training video in just one take tonight, and it turned out really nice. I got through the entire take without making any obvious mistakes, and I didn’t sound like an idiot. It appears that waiting another day to do the recording worked out pretty well.

Next Video in Progress

I started doing some test runs for my next SimplyMax training video. This one will be an introduction to working with bones and hierarchies in Max 6. I’ve got everything outlined pretty well, but I’m running into problems with clearly verbalizing and demonstrating things during the video. I’m probably just tired because I’ve been at this for a while now and it’s already 2:30 AM. I think I’ll stop for tonight and get back to it tomorrow.
