Sunny Weather, A Long Drive, and Lots of Chinese Food

Here I am hanging out at the Eastport Plaza Starbucks in Portland, OR. I drove down from Renton this afternoon to meet up with my family for an early birthday celebration. Well, it’s not really a major thing, just a little get together with the family and a chance for me to get out of town for a day. I meet up with them every year, so it’s sort of like a tradition for me. Regardless of what I’m doing where I am living, I still take a day to come into town to spend a bit of time with the important people in my life.

The drive down was pretty easy. Lots of traffic, but smooth going. The weather is gorgeous today. Sunny, a few puffs of clouds, and very hot. I’m actually at Starbucks mostly to cool off with the AC (and take advantage of the Wi-Fi). Outside temperature is about 85 degrees, which makes it about 10 degrees warmer in the car. :P

I just finished having lunch with my mom and grandmother at a really cool Chinese seafood restaurant on Powell. I can’t remember what it’s called, but I do remember the word “Om” on the t-shirts of the employees. This restaurant with the mystery name had incredibly good food. The three of us ordered 6 different dishes – far more food than we would normally get – ranging from fresh giant prawns to stirfried clams to a stew beef to simple vegetables. There was so much food that we had to pack up 4 large to-go boxes for me to take home.

Later tonight I’m going to be meeting up with my sister Debbie, my dad, and my stepmom for dinner. I wonder what Debbie is going to get me for my birthday. I mentioned an Xbox on my mandatory birthday list (something she demands every year), so that might show up tonight. Who knows. She usually manages to get something cool all the time. Such a great sister.

Only bad thing about today is Mei couldn’t make it down with me. She wasn’t feeling well this morning, and we decided that it would be best if she stayed home to rest up a bit. A whole day of driving, eating, and hanging with my family can be quite exhausting. Not something you want to do if you’re even slightly queezy.

It’s actually weird spending the whole day without Mei. I’ve become so accustomed to having her around for at least half of the day that anything longer feels odd. I talked to on the phone a few times already, and she sounds like she’s feeling better. I think part of that might have been because she decided to head to Nordstroms to walk around for a bit. Shopping usually makes her feel a lot better. :P

Speaking of shopping, I got some extra spending cash from my mom and grandmother this afternoon. I could do the responsible thing and use it to pay bills and other expenses. Right. Whatever. I’m going to spend on it fun stuff. Don’t know what it will be yet, but I’m sure I’ll find something. :)

I was late for class…. 2 HOURS LATE!!!

Looks like I goofed up for the first session of my Timing for Animation workshop. According to my calendar, the workshop was supposed to take place from 8pm to midnight on Friday June 25 (today). That would make it 12pm-4pm on Saturday June 26 in Korea. It turns out that the class was scheduled for 10am-2pm on Saturday in Korea, which makes that 6pm on Friday here.

I came home from dinner (oddly enough, at a Korean restaurant) at around 7:30pm to find a few messages in my ICQ window saying:

6:22 PM Please authorize my request and add me to your Contact List.
6:32 PM authonaztion please..
7:16 PM We waited long time.
7:22 PM We disappoint your situation.

I also got an email wondering why I had not contacted them on video conference. I thought, “Wow, these kids are really on the ball. They’re contacting me an hour and half before the class is scheduled to begin.”

At around 8pm, I fired up the video phone software and waited for them to go online and answer my call. I waited for a little while. Then I started thinking that maybe I had gotten the time wrong. So, at 8:15pm, I went to my trusty Date and Time preference pane and switched the time zone to match up with Korea. The time showed 12:15pm. I just about freaked. I had missed the class time by 2 hours.

I immediately sent an email to all involved parties explaining the confusion and apologizing for making the students wait for nearly an hour and a half. There’s still the second workshop next week, so all is not lost. Hopefully, we can reschedule a new date to make up for tonight’s mixup.

On the bright side, I already have my notes and materials ready to go. :)

UPDATE: Both workshop sessions have been rescheduled, and the times in both timezones were triple-checked to makes sure we are synchronized. All is well again.

Back to Teaching

Preparations for tonight’s Timing for Animation workshop are just about complete. I have my sample images and animations ready to go, the webcam setup sorted out, and notes all lined up in Word. It should be a very interesting experience. I will be doing my entire lecture via ICQ. No speaking. All typing. Kind of weird for a class, but, since I am teaching to a classroom in South Korea where the students comprehend written English much better than spoken English, it makes sense to do it this way.

Here are some rough keyframes from one the jump animations I’ll be demonstrating during the workshop:

Samples from a Dead Project

Here are some sample images from the animations I had been working on for the past couple of months. You can see some of the actual animations on my website.

For those who are interested, all of the animations were created with 3DS Max 5.1 and Character Studio 4. I’m not a huge fan of Character Studio, but, for this job, it worked out fine. I had a lot of animations to do (well over 100 per character), so it was nice being able to reuse poses and animations easily. Because the project got canned earlier than expected, I only completed 84 animations per characters. That’s still a lot of work completed in 2 months.
